An AI chatbot for Shopify is a chat window on your storefront that answers shopper questions in their own words, from your own store content: product pages, shipping and returns policies and FAQs. You train it on your store URL, paste one snippet into your theme, and it answers at any hour. It works from published content, so live order status stays with your team.
This guide is for a Shopify merchant who answers the same pre-sale questions every week and wants them answered while the shop is unattended. It covers what the chatbot can and cannot do, how it compares with the other ways of answering shoppers, the exact install steps, and what it costs. There is a calculator further down to put a number on the questions you miss today.
What is an AI chatbot for Shopify?
It is an AI agent trained on what your store already says. Instead of a scripted bot with buttons, it reads your pages and answers a question like "do you ship to Ireland and how long does it take?" in plain sentences, using your shipping page as the source.
With Dante AI you point the agent at your store address. It reads the page and follows internal links on the same domain, extracting the visible text from each page it finds. You can add files (for example a size guide PDF), typed text and question and answer pairs for anything that is not on the site. The crawler stays on one domain, so a help site on a different subdomain needs its own source (knowledge sources).
What can it answer for your shoppers, and what can it not?
A store chatbot is only as good as the content behind it. Here is the honest split.
- Good fit: shipping zones and delivery times, returns and exchange rules, sizing and fit, materials and care, product comparisons from your descriptions, opening hours, payment options you list, and "which product is right for me" questions your pages can answer.
- Not a fit on its own: where a specific order is right now, refunds on a specific order, or anything that needs a person to check an account. Those belong with your team.
- When the answer is missing: if the content does not cover a question, the agent says it cannot find the answer instead of guessing. Each of those questions shows you a page worth writing.
For the questions that need a person, Dante AI has two routes. With Human Handover on (Advanced and Pro plans), a Talk to a human pill sits under every reply and the conversation lands in your team Inbox for a live reply. Without it, a shopper who asks for a person is offered a short name and email form by default, on every plan including Free, so the request still reaches you.
How does it compare with an FAQ page, email or live chat?
Most stores use a mix. The table shows where each one is strong.
| Option | Available | Answers in the shopper's own words | Main cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FAQ page | Always | No, the shopper has to find the right question | Your time to write it | Publishing the answers you control |
| Contact form or email | Always open, replies in your hours | Yes, but slowly | Staff time per message | Order-specific problems |
| Live chat with staff | Only while someone is online | Yes | Staff time per chat | High-value or complex sales |
| AI chatbot trained on your store | Any hour | Yes, from your own content | A monthly plan | Repeat pre-sale questions, out of hours |
The chatbot does not replace the FAQ page: it reads it. If you only have time for one job this week, tidy your shipping and returns pages first, then train the agent on them. For a wider view across online shops, see our guide to the AI chatbot for ecommerce.
How do you add an AI chatbot to a Shopify store?
- Train the agent on your store. Start at dante-ai.com with Get started and enter your store URL. Add files or question and answer pairs for anything your pages do not say.
- Test it before shoppers do. Ask it the five questions you get most often and check each answer against your policy pages.
- Allow your domain. On your agent's Publish page, open the Install tab and add your store's hostname under Allowed domains, so nobody else can run your snippet on their site.
- Copy the embed code. Choose Floating for a launcher button in the bottom right corner of every page, then press Copy embed code.
- Paste it into your theme. In Shopify admin, open Online Store, then Themes, then the three-dot menu and Edit code. Open theme.liquid and paste the code just before the closing body tag. Save. The widget shows across your storefront (embed guide).
- Confirm it is live. Open your store, send the chat a test message, and check the Deploy page: the status line turns to Live on your site once a page carrying your snippet loads.
Two settings are worth a minute. Quick replies are suggested questions a shopper can tap; with Launcher tooltips on, the first two also float beside the closed launcher, so put your two strongest questions first. Your welcome message can be up to 1,000 characters, but a sentence or two works best. More detail is in how to add AI chat to your website.
What is an unanswered shopper question worth? A worked example
Take a store that gets 80 pre-sale questions a week and misses 25% of them, mostly in the evening and at weekends. If 5% of answered questions turn into an order and an average order is worth $60, the missed questions cost about 80 x (52 / 12) x 25% x 5% x $60 = $260 a month. These are example numbers, not benchmarks. Put your own into the calculator below.
How much does an AI chatbot for Shopify cost?
Dante AI prices are per workspace, not per seat: Free is $0, Starter $40 a month, Advanced $120 a month and Pro $400 a month, with lower per-month prices on yearly billing. Monthly credits are 100 on Free, 2,000 on Starter, 8,000 on Advanced and 30,000 on Pro. Memory decides how much of your store the agent can learn: Free holds 150,000 characters, roughly 75 web pages, and Starter 25,000,000 characters, roughly 12,500 web pages. Human Handover and lead capture forms are on Advanced and Pro. Current details are on the pricing page.
