A chatbot talks to your customers; an AI knowledge assistant answers questions from your own documents, usually for your team. Both now run on the same technology: a language model that retrieves the right passage from your content and answers in plain words. The real differences are the audience, the content you train it on and how you price it. On Dante AI, both are AI agents on the same plan.

What is the difference between an AI knowledge assistant and a chatbot?

The word chatbot covers everything from a scripted button menu to a modern AI agent. An AI knowledge assistant is narrower: it is built to find and explain information that already exists in your documents, such as policies, manuals, product specs and past answers.

How do they compare side by side?

Which costs more: a knowledge assistant or a chatbot?

Neither is inherently more expensive; the pricing model decides it. Knowledge assistant tools sold for internal use are often priced per user seat, so the bill grows with headcount. Customer chatbots are usually priced by usage, so the bill grows with traffic. Our chatbot pricing comparison shows how each model behaves.

On Dante AI there is no separate product: a knowledge assistant and a customer chatbot are both AI agents, billed from the same monthly plan and credits. Plans are Free $0, Starter $40, Advanced $120 and Pro $400 a month, with 1, 1, 3 and 10 AI agents. See the Dante AI pricing page.

Can one plan run both? A worked example

Take a 25-person company that wants a customer chatbot on its website and a knowledge assistant for staff. The volumes are assumptions for the example; use your own.

Priced per seat instead, the same knowledge assistant would cost 25 x the seat price before the customer chatbot is counted. Run your own figures through the calculator approach in our pricing comparison, then use the checker below to decide which to build first.

Which do you need first?

How do you set up either one without code?

  1. Collect the content: website pages for customers, documents for staff. Remove anything out of date first.
  2. Create one AI agent per audience and train it on that content. On Dante AI you can add your website, files and written answers with no code.
  3. Put the customer agent on your website, or share an agent through its hosted link. Anyone with a link can open it, so only train a link-shared agent on content you are happy for them to read.
  4. Test it with twenty real questions from each audience and fix the documents behind weak answers.
  5. Read transcripts weekly for the first month.
